An Epic Geological Adventure
The Brief
A luxury travel designer recently reached out to us to craft a tailored itinerary for a mother and daughter visiting the Limestone Coast from the USA. The daughter, a geology student at university, was passionate about delving into the region’s unique geological wonders. The challenge was to design an extraordinary experience that combined an in-depth exploration of the area’s geological history with unforgettable, exclusive adventures.
We centred the itinerary on the Limestone Coast’s most striking landscapes—ancient sinkholes, volcanic craters, and fossil-rich caves—curated with the expertise of renowned local geologists and specialists. To complement the educational focus, we also wove in opportunities for relaxation and indulgence, featuring the region’s breathtaking natural beauty, exceptional cuisine, and warm, welcoming hospitality.
What we put together
Once we digested the travel designer’s brief, we curated a bespoke four-day geology tour for the pair. Staying in wonderfully appointed accommodation in the heart of Penola, their tailored itinerary included a private snorkelling session at the crystal-clear Kilsby Sinkhole and a day with a renowned hydrogeologist exploring the Blue Lake and Umpherston Sinkhole, delving into the region’s volcanic history and geology.
The pair enjoyed a private six-hour tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Naracoorte Caves, gaining insights into ancient fossils and intricate cave systems. They also met a senior viticulturist in a Coonawarra vineyard to discuss how terra rossa soils shape the region’s iconic wines, visited a fifth-generation farm to learn about sustainable practices, and marvelled at the glowing ghost mushrooms in a secluded pine forest.
The itinerary balanced education and fun, blending geological exploration, sustainable farming insights, and moments of relaxation, including a private cooking class and three-course meal. Every element was thoughtfully designed for an unforgettable experience.
Simon tailored this day trip perfectly, with a blend of well and less well known wine makers and a superb lunch. He knows the area well and provided insightful commentary on the history of the region and current winemakers. The tour was great value for money and I recommend it highly.
